How to Convert Minutes to Payroll Decimals
The biggest mistake people make when calculating their pay is using standard minutes instead of decimal hours. For example, if you worked 8 hours and 30 minutes, you cannot multiply your hourly wage by 8.30. Because there are 60 minutes in an hour, 30 minutes is exactly half an hour, meaning the correct decimal is 8.50.
Here is a quick cheat sheet for converting common minutes into decimal hours:
- 15 Minutes: 0.25 Hours
- 30 Minutes: 0.50 Hours
- 45 Minutes: 0.75 Hours
Our calculator automatically generates the exact "Decimal Hours" at the bottom of the screen. Simply multiply that green number by your hourly wage to see your total gross pay for the shift!
Does this work for overnight shifts?
Yes! If you start a shift at 10:00 PM and end it at 6:00 AM the next morning, our calculator is smart enough to recognize that the end time crossed midnight and will calculate the exact 8-hour duration correctly.
