Welcome to the Sales Tax and GST Calculator by CalcHub Pro. Whether you are a business owner doing accounting, a freelancer generating invoices, or a shopper trying to figure out the true cost of an item, our free tool makes financial math effortless. You can easily add tax to a net price, or do "reverse tax calculations" to extract the tax amount from a final receipt.
Adding Tax vs. Removing Tax
Calculating tax forwards is easy, but calculating it backwards trips up almost everyone. Here is how our tool handles the math for you:
- Add Tax: If an item is $100 and tax is 8%, you simply multiply $100 by 0.08 to get $8. Your final Gross Price is $108.
- Remove Tax (Reverse Tax): If you have a receipt for $108 and need to know the original price before an 8% tax, you cannot just subtract 8%. You must divide the total by 1.08. Our tool does this complex extraction instantly so your accounting is always 100% accurate.
What is GST / VAT?
While the United States primarily uses localized Sales Tax, many other countries (like Canada, Australia, the UK, and parts of Europe) use GST (Goods and Services Tax) or VAT (Value-Added Tax). Mathematically, these function exactly the same way in our calculator. Simply enter your local percentage rate to find your exact net and gross totals.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Is Sales Tax applied before or after discounts?
In almost all jurisdictions, sales tax is calculated after discounts have been applied. If a $100 item is 20% off, you calculate the sales tax on the $80 discounted price.
Why do I get a different number when I remove tax?
Many people mistakenly subtract the tax percentage from the final price. For example, subtracting 10% from $110 gives you $99, which is incorrect. The correct math (dividing $110 by 1.10) gives you the true original price of $100.
