How We Calculate Your Due Date
Pregnancy math can be confusing because it doesn't actually start on the day you conceive! Here are the two standard methods our medical-grade calculator uses:
- Last Menstrual Period (LMP): This is the method most doctors use. Pregnancy is measured as lasting 40 weeks (280 days) from the first day of your last period. Our tool also adjusts this date if your average cycle is shorter or longer than the standard 28 days.
- Date of Conception: If you were tracking ovulation or underwent IVF, you might know the exact date of conception. In this case, we simply add 38 weeks (266 days) to that date.
Understanding Trimesters
A full-term pregnancy is divided into three trimesters, each marking major developmental milestones for your baby:
- First Trimester (Weeks 1-12): The most crucial stage of development where the baby's organs begin to form.
- Second Trimester (Weeks 13-26): Often called the "honeymoon phase" of pregnancy. Morning sickness usually fades, and you may begin to feel the baby move.
- Third Trimester (Weeks 27-40+): The final stretch where the baby gains weight rapidly and prepares for birth.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Will my baby actually be born on my due date?
Probably not! A due date is simply an estimate to guide your doctor. Only about 4% to 5% of babies arrive on their exact predicted date. It is perfectly normal for a baby to be born anywhere between 37 and 41 weeks.
