How GPA Math Actually Works
Many students think their GPA is simply an average of their grades, but that is incorrect. Your GPA is "weighted" by the number of credit hours each class is worth. Here is the formula we use:
- Step 1: Convert your letter grade into Grade Points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0).
- Step 2: Multiply your Grade Points by the course's Credit Hours. (e.g., A 3-credit class where you get an A gives you 12 Total Points).
- Step 3: Add up all your Total Points for the semester.
- Step 4: Divide your Total Points by the total number of Credit Hours you took.
Why Credit Hours Matter
Because of how the math works, a 4-credit science lab affects your final GPA much more heavily than a 1-credit PE class. Getting an 'A' in a high-credit class will significantly boost your score, while failing a high-credit class will severely drag it down.
